Born in Majorca, 15 year old Marta de la Vega, is one of Spain’s hopes for the future; at the Spanish Youth Open, which commenced in Platja d’Aro on Wednesday 6th May 2009, she is on duty for Spain `B’ in the Girls’ Team event.

Life was tough on the opening day for the teenager but competing in an ITTF Junior Circuit tournament provides valuable experience and being on duty in Platja d’Aro is very much the first stepping stones.

On the opening day, it was two defeats for Marta de la Vega.

Against Poland `B’ she suffered at the hands of Roksana Zalomska and against Germnay `B’, it was defeat against the much more experienced Ann-Kathrin Herges

Career
"I started playing to tennis in Alaró Municipal School”, explained Marta de la Vega. “I was playing both tennis and table tennis but I decanted myself for the table tennis; I like it much more, it is a complete sport".

However, her favourite sporting personality is from the sport of tennis.

Tennis Idol
"Rafa Nadal is my idol, he is an example for all athletes, I like his sacrifice, his fight, his character and humility”, said Marta de la Vega. “Like him I’d like to play at a high level in Europe and who knows, possibly even qualify for the Olympic Games.”

The Spanish star sets a fine example and it is only natural that Marta de la Vega chooses a star from her own country; however for table tennis, she chooses to outstanding names but not from Spain.

Table Tennis Superstars
"My idols in table tennis are Jan Ove Waldner and Timo Boll”, she concluded; again good choices.

Defeat for Marta de la Vega and for Spain `B’ but no problems for the top female teams.

Junior Girls’ Team
In the Girls’ Team event the top four seeded teams all recorded three-nil victories in every match to conclude the opening day without heartache.

It was success for Germany `A’ (Kathrin Mulbach, Sabine Winter), Hungary (Krisztina Ambrus, Dora Madarasz), Poland ‘A’ (Magdalena Szczerkowska, Klaudia Kusinska) and Slovakia `A’ (Andrea Daubernova, Simone Lazarcikova).

Cadet Girls’ Team
Similarly, in the Cadet Girls’ Team event there were no problems for the favourites.

Top seeds Hong Kong (Ng Ka Yee) and second seeds Portugal (Maria Xiao, Mariane Goncalves) enjoyed a trouble free day).
